To the Editor:

America is entering a period that may change its character in ways I never imagined I’d see in my lifetime. The ideals that once seemed foundational to our country are now fragile, perhaps even obsolete, in the eyes of many of those in power. This will only grow worse under a Trump administration.

It’s hard to convey the sense of alienation I feel now. Living in America, in a country I once felt so deeply connected to, is becoming harder by the day. As some of our elected leaders continue to chip away at equality, human rights and environmental responsibility, I feel less able to be active in the causes that mean so much to me.

Many of my friends, too, are struggling with how to move forward. For so long, we believed that America could be a beacon for progress, but now it feels as though I’ll have to bury my head in the sand just to cope with the everyday reality.

As I write this, it’s painful to accept that this country — the one I’ve cherished — is slipping into a state where those in power may not be challenged for years to come. I worry deeply about the future of our rights, our institutions and our global standing.

I don’t know how much longer I’ll have the strength to keep fighting for the values I believe in. The America I grew up in feels like it’s slipping away, and I can’t help but wonder what will be left.

To the Editor:

In Tuesday’s presidential election, perhaps your candidate was the winner, and perhaps not. Either way, let us all try to eliminate some of the harmful divisions in our country the election has created.
